BYD’s Denza Z reveals its all new steer by wire architecture, ditching steering column for 0.1° precision, ±20° rear steering, and a 4.62-metre turning radius.

Imagine a sports car that steers without any mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels, that’s exactly what BYD preparing with the Denza Z. Newly leaked teardown details reveal a fully in-house steer-by-wire system from Fudi Technology, delivering 0.1° steering precision, triple-motor control, and up to ±20° rear-wheel steering for a tight 4.62-meter turning radius.

Backed by a six-layer redundant safety architecture, the system promises sharper handling, faster responses, improved packaging efficiency, and next-generation electronic steering for premium high performance EVs.

Steer by Wire System

The Denza Z’s biggest innovation is something most drivers have never experienced, the steering wheel with no mechanical connection to the wheels. Instead, every steering input is sent electronically through BYD’s in-house steer-by-wire system developed by Fudi Technology which is mark as a major shift from conventional steering used in most production cars.

The system reportedly delivers steering accuracy of up to 0.1° while responding three times faster than a traditional mechanical setup. Besides quicker reactions, removing the steering column also frees up space at the front, reduces component complexity, and opens new possibilities for future vehicle design and crash protection.

The new steer-by-wire technology will debut on the 1,582 hp Denza Z which make it one of BYD’s most advanced electric performance cars. The system delivers 0.1° steering precision and processes steering inputs three times faster than a conventional mechanical setup.

A single front steering motor works alongside two independent rear steering motors. Together, they enable up to ±20° rear-wheel steering, cutting the turning radius to just 4.62 metres while improving agility in city driving and stability during high-speed cornering.

The Denza Z introduces a completely new steering experience by eliminating the mechanical steering column. Instead of using steering inputs, it uses transmitted electronically through BYD’s in-house Fudi Technology system, creating a cleaner, and more advanced cockpit architecture.

The electronic setup not only saves space but also supports quicker steering responses and higher control accuracy. It is fully integrated with BYD’s E³ vehicle platform, enabling real-time communication between steering, chassis, and other vehicle control systems for improved driving performance.

Then comes the steering hardware features a compact POR8 single-winding motor on the front axle, replacing the larger dual-winding designs commonly used in the industry. This reduces heat generation, saves space, and helps improve packaging around the front suspension.

For safety, BYD employs a six-layer redundancy system with dual control chips, separate 12V and 48V power supplies, six-phase motor monitoring, redundant torque, and angle sensors, dual software systems, and continuous supervision through the E³ platform to maintain steering control during faults.

Well, the advanced steer-by-wire system reserved for BYD’s premium-performance lineup with 1,582 hp Denza Z becoming the first production model to feature the technology. The car already undergone extensive testing at Germany’s Nürburgring ahead of its official launch.

BYD has not confirm the number of variants, battery options, exterior colours, pricing, or booking timeline. More details are closer to production as the company prepares to introduce the model under China’s new steer-by-wire regulations.
